The artistic director and founder of the Berlin Shakespeare Company cannot emphasize enough how defining it was for him to encounter Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre Neuss over ten years ago and how the Neuss Festival led to the founding of his own company in Berlin.
This year the Berlin Shakespeare Company, a regular guest in Neuss, will be presenting "The Taming of the Shrew" on our stage. This is a difficult play with an underlying macho attitude which is no longer applicable to the 21st century. The Swiss director Tom Ryser avoids this dilemma by comparing two equal partners Katharina and Petrucchio. He shows the struggle between the two individuals who neither want to give up their freedom for the other, nor hide their personality from one another - actually a very modern relationship model: How true love conquers all.
Performance time: 2 hours 30 minutes including interval.
