The Bremer Shakespeare Company, with whom we baptized the Neuss Festival 20 years ago, is devoting itself to the two great Roman plays, "Julius Caesar" and "Anthony and Cleopatra." Lee Beagley, the director, has the responsibility of showing both plays on one evening.
Shakespeare portrays Caesar as an ageing man under fire. He is deaf, epileptic, vain and anti-republican. He becomes the victim of his own self-conceit and his successors build a triarchy. One of them, Mark Anthony, is present throughout both plays, as orator of the most famous eulogy in the history of literature and then as Cleopatra's lover, the Queen of Egypt, a relationship for which he risks both his life and Rome.
An exciting evening with Eric Roßbander as Caesar, Petra-Janina Schultz as Cleopatra and Tobias Dürr as Mark Anthony.
