One of the most well-known poets amongst Shakespeare's contemporaries is the Spaniard Lope de Vega (1562-1635). Of his colossal work of 500 preserved plays, very few are known outside of Spain. Therefore the Shakespeare Festival considers itself to be all the more fortunate to offer the rediscovery of a comedy and a tragedy from Lope de Vegas' oeuvre. The Madrilenian Fundación Siglo de Oro's commendable work is wholeheartedly devoted to the repertoire's care and upkeep. In “El Perro del Hertelano“, the countess harbours a jealous love for her secretary because he may love her maid. The class distinction, however, does not allow her to approach him until an elderly count adopts the boy, clearing the path towards a happy end. Until then: thousands of intrigues, mix-ups and trickery- a feast for the senses.
