The most contemporary performance of this year's festival comes from Budapest. Against the background of Hungary's most recent post-1989 history, the HOPPart Company directed by Csaba Polgár have created a jolting version of Shakespeare's “Coriolanus“, in which ancient Romans are replaced by modern Hungarian citizens who believed that everything would be different after 1989.
“Coriolanus“ is, in this case, an adolescent under his mother's influence who, despite his past accomplishments, must learn that a democracy does not tolerate heroes.
The seriousness of the situation is in strong contrast to the gripping moments created by the actor's perfectly sung music and the delightful humour with which the characters seem to approach their fate.
A thrilling piece by a young, yet Shakespeare-experienced, director that has already successfully been performed in Berlin.
