Friedrich Schiller's Maria Stuart follows the evocative performance of Shakespeare's Henry VIII - again under the motto “Shakespeare and beyond“. Henry's daughter Elizabeth outshone a whole era as an Anglican queen. Her Catholic niece Mary Stuart attempted in turn to enforce her claim to the English throne but was ultimately imprisoned by Elizabeth I for 18 years and finally executed as a traitor. Schiller's drama climaxes in an exciting encounter of the two adversaries which was in fact planned but never happened. bremer shakespeare company has taken on this masterpiece of German literature and has created a highly aesthetic chamber piece brought to life by Petra-Janina Schulz and four actors.
As the irony of history would have it, Mary Stuart's son James I succeeded Elizabeth on the English throne.
