20 years after Shakespeare's death, this tragicomedy by Pierre Corneille was performed in Paris for the first time. Written in alexandrine rhyming couplets, it became one of the most successful French classics.
The plot: Chimène and Rodrigue are madly in love with one another but a feud between their fathers ruins all their prospects of a happily ever after. To protect his family's honour, Rodrigue must avenge his father's death by slaying his beloved's father. Despite her love for Rodrigue, Chimène must now guard her own family's honour and demands her lover's head from the king. In this desperate situation, however, Rodrigue receives the king's favour because he saves the kingdom from the invasion of its enemies, the Moors...
The conflict between love and honour gives “Le Cid“ a contemporary, rather than an antiquated, touch.
Brilliantly performed by the actors of the Atelier Théâtre Actuel from Paris.
