Description

DER REST IST SCHWEIGEN (“THE REST IS SILENCE”)

Federal Republic of Germany 1959 · 103 min · DF · 35 mm · FSK 12 (PG12)

D: Helmut Käutner S: Helmut Käutner based on a model by Shakespeare

C: Igor Oberberg Cast: Hardy Kruger, Peter van Eyck, Ingrid Andree amongst others

Shakespeare's Hamlet in an interpretation by Helmut Käutner, who transports the play

to the Ruhr area in 1959 during the time of the German economic miracle.

Käutner subtly brings to light subjects of repression and a seemingly de-nazified society. John H. Claudius returns from the USA as the heir of the Claudius steelworks after the death of his father. In doubt about the alleged cause of death and tormented by his suspicion that his stepfather and uncle Paul is his father’s murderer, he stages the murder with the help of a ballet ensemble. The film could only be produced because of the efforts of the directors Harald Braun, Helmut Käutner and Wolfgang Staudte, who founded the production company Freie Film Produktion GmbH in Hamburg from 1958 to 1960, under which the production KIRMES (1960) was created by Staudte. The exterior shots were taken in Dusseldorf-Lohausen, Oberhausen and London.
