Illyria seems to be the perfect kingdom of love, but does that mean it is also a paradise? On its shores rage storms; in it walls, chaos and madness threaten to erupt. The shipwrecked almost lose all hope in the world they find there: being beat without reason, loved by strangers – oblivious as to why. It is Shakespeare's strangest and most melancholic comedy, in which, in addition to the lovers, Sir Toby and the vain steward Malvolio play their ancestral roles. This is the third time the Rheinische Landestheater will perform this piece, staged by Alexander Marusch, on the Globe stage - because, yes, it is that good.
